No one can hurt you as deeply as those that you allow close to your heart. Those that have been hurt in the past have built emotional walls to prevent that closeness with someone else. Often times they feel that it can leave them vulnerable to future heartbreak. To the wall builders’ credit however, no one can get through or even see over the wall. Unfortunately, that includes the builder as well. In their attempt at self-preservation they have sealed themselves off from relationships, the bad and the good alike. While this can seem safer, I believe you rob yourself of the joy of life. The ups and downs are part of it, and each is as important as the other in building good character.
Fair warning, I am writing this article from an emotional place and I am reeling a bit from a conversation I had this morning. Maybe I am building character right now! It certainly feels that way when people you thought you could count on fail you, it really hurts. Especially when you realize the self-absorbed behavior, you have seen for decades is all that person really is. It is as deep as they go, and they have had almost no positive effect on your life. Once you realize that, you realize you are better off without them and even though you fight yourself over the choice, sometimes it is best to let go of them, for you.
