3:30 am and here I sit. How many other fathers wake in the night wondering if they are doing enough. More importantly are they doing good?
Are we doing right by our children by spending so much time away from them while we scrape and claw for a paycheck that never quite pays all the bills. What is this world that we have created for ourselves. Everyone out there fighting with each other for that last loaf of bread, that last toy for Christmas. We fight with our friends and obey our enemies. We struggle all our lives just to put food on the table and in the end all we have left are regrets. Instead of fighting over the last loaf of bread, why do we never turn our anger towards those responsible. Instead we blame each other. Just as they want us to do.
I should have _____ more. Fill in the blank, the possibilities are endless.
I have spent 30 years struggling to survive. Like many other men and women out there, I sacrificed so my children wouldn’t go without. It is a constant battle that never seems to have a winner. In order to get ahead we almost have to step on some other people. I refuse to do so. No matter how much government or society says we should be enemies. We may be different fish, but we are all in the same fishbowl.
White vs. black, Christian vs. Muslim, man vs. woman, rich vs. poor, old vs young. The very things we should celebrate we are told to hate. Divide us in every way possible so we don’t realize, we are fighting over the table scraps while the gluttonous haves continue to push their bootheels on the necks of the have nots. As long as they talk about equity when they do so, maybe no one will notice.
And they don’t. No one wonders why there is only one loaf of bread. We don’t turn our attention to the ones responsible for shortages or skyrocketing prices. Instead we fight and blame each other.
It is not my neighbor’s fault. It is government’s fault. The sooner we as Americans realize that and turn our anger towards them instead of each other, the sooner we will begin restoring America to the shining city on a hill it is meant to be.
The answer is not found in fighting each other it is found in loving each other.
